Task
Crews must mark overhead where track is to be installed. A 1-2 mm variance is allowed. Workers must align with a mark on the floor. One worker is positioned on a scaffold while the other is down on the floor.
Exposure
The work is very precise and aligning the overhead mark with the mark on the floor requires several minutes and adjustments which require the worker to hold the plumb line with hands above shoulders, continuously looking up, exposing him to awkward posture and static posture, while his partner calls out directions of where to move the line.
Intervention Process
One crew member, shown here, is an avid fisherman and owns several fishing poles and reels. He brought one of the poles and a reel to work and re-threaded the pole and reel with a plumb line. The reel mechanism allowed the line to be shortened or lengthened with a simple turnoff the reel wheel. At the tip of the pole he secured a plastic putty knife which he has modified by making an indentation in the blade to assure the specific direction of the plumb line. The job could then be done easily with one person , arms below the shoulder.
