Task
Cleaning grates in the raised metal floor.
Exposure
Workers were required to clean the grates with a variety of manually operated hand tools, working in a kneeling position on the grates, exposing them to musculoskeletal risk associated with awkward posture, contact stress, forceful exertion and repetitive motion.
Intervention
Retrofitting a cordless screw gun with one half of a toilet brush bristle, the worker was able to easily clean between the grates, eliminating forceful exertion and repetitive motion. Wearing knee pads addressed the contact stress.
Material
Cordless screw driver, toilet brush (purchased at a hardware store for less than $5.00) and knee pads (available at outdoor stores).
