Task
Applying tape to seams that are at difficult heights.
Exposure
Finishers arrived after the installation of plumbing and electrical conduit, making access to seams at heights of 16 feet extremely difficult. Climbing in and around pipe and conduit exposes the worker to musculoskeletal risk from awkward postures, forceful exertion and repetitive motion.
Intervention
The finisher adapted a tool used by painters to hold brushes and placed it on an extension pole. In place of the brush, he attached a 6" finishing knife which could then be set at various angles allowing him to reach previously unreachable seams with minimal arm extension and less awkward postures. Finishers were hesitant to use this process, but when faced with a significant barrier they used it and found they really liked it and went on to recommend it to others.
Materials
Brush holder can be purchased at a paint store for under $10.00. The extension pole costs approximately $20.00
