Task
Workers are attaching temporary plywood treads to each stair step for protection, during construction, of the third and fourth levels of a stairwell. These treads are attached from the underside of the stairwell and are not reachable by ladder or scissor lift from below.
Exposure
Workers faced the necessity of aerial lift equipment resulting in awkward postures and the added requirement of fall protection.
Intervention
Two pieces of ten foot conduit were utilized to obtain a 12' to 14' reach to place the wing nut and bracket on the underside of each stair step. The workers crimped the end of the conduit to hold the wing nut and taped the end to provide friction to hold the bracket. The worker then positioned the loaded conduit to allow threading of the bolt down through the plywood and stairs from above and into the bracket and wing nut.
Material
Conduit.
