Task
Installing slack bars into the ceiling embed on the utility level of the building.
Exposure
Due to grates already having been installed and minimal floor space, using a scissor lift was not practical. Using a screw gun with an extension allowed the worker to remain on the floor while attaching the bar to the ceiling. Unfortunately the tool extension still required him to work with his arm in full extension above his shoulder in awkward and static postures.
Intervention
The tool extension needs to be a minimum of 2 feet longer to bring the workers arm/hand down to a neutral posture while operating the tool. Better sequencing of utility installation would have helped eliminate the problem.
Material
Several major tool suppliers have specific hand powered tools with extensions. Cost and method vary. Some have handle extensions and other have shaft extensions (as shown here).
