Task

Cutting through the floor coating to remove the dome mold lid from the floor opening and replacing it with a grating that facilitates air flow.

Exposure

Worker is required to work under a two-foot raised floor in a confined space, cutting through the floor coating to locate a red twine that, when pulled, is supposed to cut through the coating around the lid to allow it to be removed and replaced by the flow-through grating. There are several thousand lids to be replaced. This operation exposes the worker to awkward posture, contact stress, forceful exertion, repetitive
motion and static posture.

Intervention

Using this new tool (1) eliminated the need to place red twine around the lid prior to applying the coating, (2) eliminated the need to dig and locate the red twine that when found often broke, and (3) provided an easy and effective way to cut through the coating and allow removal of the lid. This tool proved to be more effective than the red twine method.

Material

Linoleum cutting blade. Approximately $30.00 for a box of 6.
