Task

Crews are core drilling into a reinforced concrete deck.

Exposure

The worker is using a core drill to cut a hole through a reinforced concrete deck. The star design handle to drive the bit into the concrete is short forcing the worker to bend forward into an awkward posture when operating. The length of time to complete the hole keeps him in a static posture as well.

Intervention Process

By using a two foot length of pipe with a diameter that fits over the handle spoke he lengthens the handle allowing him to operate the drill in an upright neutral posture. He could add a vibration dampening material to the grip area of the pipe which would help to reduce his exposure to vibration from the drill. Ergonomic training was also needed to assure the extension was actually used most effectively.

Materials

The pipe is easily found on site at no additional cost. The vibration dampening material can be found at various stores such as Safety Supply, Home Repair and Bike Shops.
