Task
Steel ceiling grids needed to be installed which required securing large 8' x 20' grids, weighing 650 lbs. into a lowered ceiling, using 2 Genie lifts having been retrofitted with out-rigging and other improvements.
Exposure
Potential for damaging the grids, slow operation, coordination issues between two people, and the possible tipping of the lifts were some of the problems encountered. Awkward posture, especially of the neck and shoulders of the equipment operators, while looking upward and operating the power wrench which turned the hand crank of the lifts, was a result.
Intervention
Utilizing a mini-forklift with 6' extensions wrapped with padding eliminates the need to coordinate two genie lifts. The forklift picks the grid from the point of delivery, eliminating the use of dollies and any manual handling of the grid, and lifts it into place. Workers in the two scissor lifts performed the function of attaching the grid to the lowered ceiling.
