Kickoff Event

In October 2006, ORC coordinated The National Summit on Contractor Safety. The objective of the Summit was to examine a growing concern: that contract workers experience a disproportionately large share of serious injuries and fatalities on the job.

Participants were asked to identify:

  • Key challenges to high contractor safety performance;
  • Strategies, methods and best practices for improving contractor safety management;
    *Critical areas requiring research that would contribute to improved contractor safety performance.

The Summit employed an intense two-day format to identify key factors that contribute to contractor loss and to develop solutions to those problems. This first-ever multi-industry and multi-disciplinary dialogue engaged representatives from different phases of the contracting process. Representatives from business, labor, and government participated along with safety and health, operations, and procurement staff from both host and contract employers, each of whom shared their unique perspectives of contract work and the contracting process.

The discussions provided insights into the real factors that undermine contractor safety performance. Summit participants worked to identify possible solutions and recommendations to address those factors.
