Task
Crews are required to move pedestals weighing several hundred pounds from their point of delivery on the dock into a clean room setting for installation.
Exposure
The environment to which the pedestal is being delivered cannot support a fork lift and the design of the pedestal does not support other material handling devices. It is necessary to attach wheels to the pedestal feet to facilitate ease of movement. Workers are willing to get down on the ground laying on their side or kneeling to attach the wheels.
Intervention Process
These crews received ergonomic training and understand musculoskeletal risk factors. By mounting multi-swivel wheel platforms onto each of the feet of the pedestal it is easily moved to its point of installation without exposing the crew to forceful exertion. Once the pedestal is at the point of installation a gantry and chain fall will pick it up allowing the wheel platforms to be removed then set it into a hole in the raised metal floor for final installation. The mounting of the wheels can put the worker into an awkward posture, but by having the fork lift at the dock, and the gantry and chain fall at the point of installation, the feet are within the power zone for the workers to mount/dismount the wheels without exposure to awkward posture and contact stress.
Materials
The contractor made the wheel platforms compatible with the pedestal feet and easily attachable.
