Task

Holes must be drilled into small steel seismic clip restraints (10" x 4" x ⅛") used for leveling large tool pedestals during installation.

Exposure

In a designated shop area one worker uses a power drill press to customize seismic steel clips by drilling additional holes. This task required holding the drill down, manually, for several minutes while applying force to the bit. Hundreds of plates were needed.

Intervention Process

A power punch press was purchased taking all forceful exertion out of the process. It
also reduced repetitive motion because more than one plate could be punched out at a time making the process more efficient.

Materials

The Hydraulic Punch Press, cost approximately $10,000.00. This is a rather large expenditure, but the improved efficiency and removal of musculoskeletal risk factors that lead to injury supports the purchase. It is also the right thing to do to remove the risk factors to the workers.
