Task


Worker is drilling overhead in a clean room environment where material generated by the drilling must be contained at the point of the drill. The task is located in a highly congested area restricting access by workers and the tools and equipment needed to do the job.

Exposure


Typically, one worker would do the drilling and a second worker would hold a vacuum hose up at the point of drilling to capture all metal particles generated by the drilling. Two people exposed to awkward posture and static posture. The individual operating the drill also had forceful exertion and vibration exposure.

Intervention Process


A device was made to cover the drill bit that included a mechanism to connect the vacuum hose to the drill. The drill was modified by using two plumbing accessories, a suction plunger and a sanitary "T" plastic pipe.

Materials


Purchase all parts off the shelf at any supply house where plumbing materials are sold. Cost should be less than $10.00.
