Task

Working under a raised metal floor (RMF) securing pedestals.

Exposure

Workers must work on knees or sit with legs extended in a very confined 2' x 2' area between the pedestals and drill holes into the concrete. They then place screws that secure the pedestal to the floor and vacuum up material produced from drilling the hole. Positions required to do this work expose the workers to awkward posture and contact stress.

Intervention

(1) Sitting on an anti-fatigue mat, (2) adjustable padded stool on wheels, or (3) a plastic waste basket with the bottom covered with a garden knee pad, secured by acceptable plastic tape, fabricated from materials on the job, reduced the risk.

Material

The cost of item (2) was about $40.00.
