Task

Hanging 4' x 12' gypsum board behind pipes in riser rooms.

Exposure

Due to placement of the pipes, the carpenters were forced to manually handle up to 120 lb. sheets of gypsum board without mechanical assistance. This exposed the workers to serious musculoskeletal injury from awkward posture, contact stress, forceful exertion and static posture.

Intervention

Carpenters were allowed to move ahead of the Fitters to install the drywall. They were then able to be closer to the wall they were covering, which allowed them to lift without extension and have the unobstructed use of scissor lifts. Communication and trades willing to accommodate each other as much as possible are key here. Without intervention, "First come, first to install" sequencing prevails.
