Task

Using a pop-riveter on a damper.

Exposure

Worker was using a manual pop-riveter requiring crimping of the riveter twice to secure a rivet into each of approximately eight thousand dampers. The crimping required forceful exertion and holding the tool required hyper-extension and awkward postures of the fingers because of the wide expanse between the tool handles. Forceful exertion was required each time the worker squeezed the handle to activate the tool and the number of dampers being modified resulted in repetitive motion.

Intervention

The manually operated riveter was replaced by an air operated tool which required one activation of the trigger to secure the rivet, resulting in reduction of repetitive motion, elimination of forceful exertion and awkward posture. Needless to say, efficiency was also increased.

Material

Cost of air operated tool approximately $280.00
