Task

Cutting pipe is part of the job.

Exposure

When cutting pipe with a Porta band saw, the worker is exposed to vibration and forceful exertion due to the need to hold and guide the saw.

Intervention

In this instance, the work was being conducted in a cut shop where a work bench was available allowing for a Wack pipe cutter to be bolted to the bench surface at a good height supporting neutral posture. This took the tool out of the hand of the worker removing exposure to vibration and forceful exertion. This tool also provides a more precise, smooth cut.

Materials

There are many brands of this type of saw and the average cost is approximately $2500.00 for a generic and as much as $4,500.00 for a name brand.
