Task

Large sections of pipe needed to be wiped down manually prior to being moved into a clean room environment.

Exposure

This job was typically done on the floor. The size of the pipe and location requires the worker to get into awkward posture to clean the pipe before it can be taken into a Level 1 clean room area. This also exposes the worker to musculoskeletal risk from repetitive motion and contact stress.

Intervention

Using a floor mop which has a 5' long handle and a swivel mop head allowed for ease of cleaning the entire inside while supporting improved posture and less repetitive motion. The pipe was placed on top of a commonly used utility cart which put their cleaning interaction at a better height to avoid some of the awkward posture. It also allowed them to deliver the pipe without needing to lift or manually handle it more. Hundreds of sections of this pipe was installed.

Materials

The floor mop costs $25.00 at one of many cleaning supply companies. The utility cart is easily purchased through a catalog for about $125.00.
